What & How
Does It Work?
Double glazed units are often referred to as (DGU's) double glazed units or (IGU's) insulated glass units.
Double Glazing consists of two pieces of glass with a spacer bar in between that creates an airspace, which is then sealed together producing a completely sealed insulated glass unit (IGU).
Glass is the main component of any IGU. However, glass, in itself, is a poor insulator and heat can pass through it with ease. It is the space between the two layers of glass in a double glazed unit that gives it its thermal attributes.
The performance of the IGU in reducing heat loss can be enhanced by using large airspaces which act as an insulation layer. Larger airspaces up to 20mm provide better insulation than the minimum 6mm and 8mm and it is always advisable to achieve 10mm or wider air space.
Further enhancement can be made by including Argon Gas between the two layers of glass. Argon gas is a naturally occurring inert gas which is not harmful to you and is denser than air and therefore acts as a greater barrier to heat loss and solar heat gain. 4% addition to the heat retention rating
Double glazed units used are dual seal units comprising a primary seal of Polyisobutylene (PIB) to the spacer face and a secondary perimeter seal of Polysulphide. This results in a high quality IGU with a 10 year warranty suitable for commercial and domestic applications.
This is not a low quality, clip-on solution. Our IGU solutions are purpose built for each home, and meet the highest standards.
The Benefits
Of Double Glazing
Specifically designed to reduce heat loss from homes and buildings, by using different combinations can give other benefits including noise and UV reduction, solar control, privacy and security.
Reduce Heat Loss
Using different combinations of glass, spacer bar thickness and argon gas you can reduce the amount of thermal loss through your windows by between 52% - 72%.
Save Energy and Increase Comfort
Helps keep generated heat inside the room keeping a more consistent temperature and reducing heating costs.
Reduce Condensation
Crying windows is a serious problem and left unchecked allows mould and mildew to grow, reduces heating efficiency and makes for an unhealthy home. Can also rot timber window frames.
Reduce Noise
Using different combinations of glass you can reduce the amount of noise by between 20% - 55%.
Reduce heat gain, glare, UV and fading damage
Using different combinations of glass like tinted and laminated glass, you can reduce the amount of thermal gain, UV damage and fading to household furnishings.
Increase Security
Discourage intruders for safety and security. It's more difficult for intruders to break in through double glazed windows, particularly if you include laminated or toughened glass.
